Williamson Medical Center offers a full spectrum of rehabilitation services ranging from inpatient and outpatient physical therapy to occupational therapy. cardiac rehab, pulmonary rehab, speech therapy, lymphedema therapy and wound care. Our Rehabilitation Services department offers both inpatient therapies for patients during their hospital stay as well as post-operative therapy at our Tollgate Medical Plaza location in Thompson’s Station. This location is convenient and was the first to bring these services to Spring Hill and surrounding communities south of Franklin.

In fact, the Tollgate Medical Plaza location offers something few other PT locations in Williamson County are able to offer: physical therapy, lymphedema therapy, an imaging center and a lab for blood work in the same building.

“All joint replacement patients have to get daily labs drawn to ensure the blood isn’t getting too thin,” said Physical Therapist Rich Hamilton. “If you go to our Tollgate location for your PT, you can get both things done in one stop. I don’t know of any other physical therapy offices that offer that. It just makes the post-operative process much easier and more convenient for the patient.”

Physical Therapy

The therapists here are an integral part of WMC’s Accelerated Recovery Program where joint replacement patients get up and moving hours after surgery.

“Our physical therapy department at Williamson Medical Center is outstanding,” said Brian Perkinson, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon with Vanderbilt Bone & Joint in Franklin.

“They are an integral part of the success of our joint replacement program. Specifically, they are the individuals that provide patients with the training and confidence to venture out of the hospital and into the world with an artificial joint. They destroy patient’s fears and empower them with independence.”

The WMC Physical Therapy program also offers a rare one-to-one patient-to-therapist ratio. Unlike many therapy programs that have one therapist working with multiple patients, WMC’s program is strictly one-on-one so the therapist can remain focused on one person who gets individualized attention. “Patients tell us all the time we are the best-kept secret in Williamson County,” said Clay Chapman, director of Rehab Services for Williamson Medical Center.

Cardiac Rehab

Our 12-week cardiac rehab program teaches lifestyle changes, diet and stress management. The long-range goal being to help cardiac patients learn to live and continue to maintain an active, healthy lifestyle.

Not only does the program help a person get moving again after surgery, but it helps them know at what pace they need to go. We can give them the confidence they need to get back to walking or racquetball or whatever they enjoy doing by getting them started in a safe, monitored environment. And we can push them a little harder if they are ready for that. Read more about Cardiac Rehab.

Pulmonary Rehab

Pulmonary Rehab is for anyone with a serious lung disease such as COPD, pulmonary fibrosis or pulmonary hypertension, among others, according to the program’s director, Devin Sherman, M.D. The program offered here at WMC is a first for Williamson County and serves a wide range of lung disease patients. Outpatient Wound Care

In addition to physical rehabilitation, outpatient wound care also falls under our Rehab Services umbrella. We have a Certified Wound Specialist on our staff whose focus is on top-notch wound care.

We apply and monitor negative pressure therapy, which helps a wound heal faster by cleaning the wound and helping to promote better circulation.

Lymphedema Therapy Services

Williamson Medical Center’s Physical Therapy department is proud to introduce two of Middle Tennessee’s most highly trained Certified Lymphedema Therapists. Christi Ford and Mitzi Smith have both completed the comprehensive 135-hour certification course from the Academy of Lymphatic Studies and are practicing at our Tollgate Medical Plaza therapy center conveniently located just off I-840 in Thompson’s Station. Because Lymphedema is a lifelong, chronic condition, the appropriate therapy is crucial to minimizing the side effects, which include excessive swelling, tissue hardening, recurring infections, pain and loss of mobility. Training

Our physical and occupational therapists consistently embark on advanced training and continuing education efforts to ensure the entire department can stay up to date on the best evidence-based practice to provide the best possible care to our patients. Many of the WMC physical therapists are on their way to obtaining doctorate degrees. Our therapists are also committed to helping educate the next generation by continually working with physical therapy students.
